Ilminster Arts Centre Exhibition 'Vision'

The Meeting House

What a brilliant experience! The exhibition was very popular and the work had great feedback.

We all had a great deal of interest in all of my work, and a few sales!

'Garn Ffadryn' Llyn Peninsula, North Wales

Thinking back to my amazing week in North Wales, its time to plan another adventure. This June I will be joining an intrepid group of women to climb Mt Snowdon. Word of my Welsh climbing experience has fueld the imagination of fellow women adventure seekers and a trip in imminent. Watch this space!

Exhibition film from the private view. I was interviewed along with other exhibiting artists. The event was wonderful and highlighted the hard work of Sue Ryder Care.

VISION

(three artists - one vision)

at the arts centre Ilminster 18 January to 20 February 2009.

(jointly curated by Diane Burnell of the arts centre and Zoe Li of S.A.W.)

The arts centre at Ilminster and Somerset Art Works have joined in partnership to curate this exciting and innovative exhibition of work by three of the most talented emerging artists working in the South West.

The aim of this exhibition is to bring to a traditional and historical local amenity, the vision of these young artists for the future of the visual arts in Somerset.

The artists featured in this exhibition share the vision that Somerset should and can become a centre of excellence for the visual arts. The establishment of University status at Somerset College of Arts and Technology in Taunton; the development of the Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre, the planned curatorial role of Somerset Art Works and the moves being taken to enhance the profile of the arts centre at Ilminster all combine to help turn their vision into reality.

The arts centre at Ilminster has played an important part in the community for many years and has developed into a cultural centre in which people can enjoy the arts, whether it is through music, the visual arts, poetry or through participation in the many workshops which take place on a regular basis.

The main aim of the centre is to provide art for all and it is determined to be part of this vision through supporting Somerset Art Works in its endeavour to provide a platform for the best of our emerging artists here in the West Country.

To launch an ongoing programme of involvement with Somerset Art Works in the support of emerging artists in Somerset, the arts centre is proud to welcome the following artists who will be exhibiting at the centre in January 2010:

Three artists - one vision!

THE ARTISTS

All three artists are recent B.A. first class honours graduates - Andrea and Alison from Somerset College, Taunton (University of Plymouth) and Kitty from Bath Spa University.

Andrea Rowbotham -

"My paintings represent a visual paradox of landscape and body. They are a personal integration of 'myself' within the landscape.

They were produced in direct response to a solitary week of walking and climbing in North Wales, where I experienced fear, euphoria, wonder and a heightened sense of 'self'. They are a celebration of the environment, identity, and female strength.

My canvasses consist of several realities, a multiple experience of space, colour language and form. These realities depending on how they are integrated convey different meanings, or if looked at subjectively communicate a myriad of subjective nuances. The onlooker will make sense of these ambiguous elements depending on his or her personal experiences."

Kitty Hillier -

"I am currently working on plywood, using my own visual language of painted and carved marks to trigger the viewer's imagination. I am interested in the hand-made, the physicality of working back into the wood and the way in which marks react together on the surface. Within this two-dimensional plane there can also be a deeper space that may allow the viewer to be transported and act as an escape. I see my paintings as 'open' works; they let   the outside in by allowing the viewer to bring their own interpretations and narratives to them."

 Alison Page -

"Inner Landscapes -

Fragments of the past ...fragments of the present...fragments of the future?

Accumulation.

Life is a rich (and complex) tapestry - as is the composition of the Inner Self."

The contemplative and thought-provoking work produced by these artists may be abstract in nature but our aims are clear and well defined. Our best talent should not have to go to centres like London in order to be recognised - Somerset has the largest number of working artists of any County in the country and must rise to the challenge. Please join with us in giving your support.
